Isted & Variants used as First Names and Middle Names
by Bruce Isted (April 2007)
Introduction
For the majority, genealogy and family history research usually revolves around researching your ancestors and descendants and understanding the lives and times they lived in. Furthermore, when researching a name, naturally the most important part is the surname. However as a result of my “Isted one-name study”, I am also interested in other forms of the ISTED and variant names besides just surnames; ie: place names, first names (Forenames/Christian names) and middle names. It is these latter two forms that I hope to give you a brief outline of what I have researched so far, which also might be of interest to you.
Both first names and middle names can be a helpful resource for finding clues to family relationships. There are only a few (rare) instances where Isted, Histed, Highsted, Hysted (& other variants) have been used as a first name; whereas it is more commonly used as a middle name. This is because a person’s middle name is often the same name as the maiden name of their mother or a grandmother. And to a lesser degree perhaps the name has some other family connection. Another reason is that when a birth occurs out of wedlock, sometimes the father’s surname is used as a middle name. This latter reason happened to my paternal 3x great-grandfather, Henry ISTED (1804-1872). He was baptised in Ashburnham, Sussex as Henry Isted COLLINS base-born son of Charity COLLINS; according the a Bastardy Bond the father was Thomas ISTED (1772-1841). In 1836 Henry (as well as his wife Elizabeth & 3 children) dropped the COLLINS surname and took on ISTED.
In this file it is my intention to show you some first name and middle name examples of the ISTED and variant surname that I have come across in my research. Please note that this list is not complete and in some cases the data has not been verified; therefore there will be omissions and possible errors. If you come across any examples not mentioned, I would be pleased to hear about it so I can add the data to my files.
Sources used in this research are:
i) IGI especially using the website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis
ii) Various English Parish Registers/Bishops Transcripts.
iii) England & Wales GRO birth, marriage & death Indexes 1837+.
iv) Various English Census Records 1841-1901.
For ease of reference I have split the file into two main sections:
Isted, etc used as a first name.
Isted, etc used as a middle name.
Within each section I may briefly outline the person’s full name, when born, baptised, died, buried and if found in a census record. I have not researched all the names and all the events so in many instances I have stated “still to locate” or simply left a blank space. If any reader knows this information I’d be pleased to hear about it. But of more importance is to know who their (H)ISTED ancestor which would tell us how they acquired the name as a first name or middle name.
Key/Abbreviations:
A name in red indicates that this has a link to my ancestry.
An * (asterisk) indicates I have proof of the event &/or further data.
