Summary of (H)ISTED Family Trees

by Bruce Isted (March 2008)

INTRODUCTION

For most people, genealogy and family history research usually revolves around researching their own ancestors and understanding their lives and the times in which they lived. The first thing they usually do, is to start compiling a Family Tree, to put all the names, dates and places into order and to provide some historical perspective. Many people want to record their family trees as far back as possible, concentrating on one line – usually the paternal; while others set out wanting to, or end up, researching several lines. I, on the other hand, decided to concentrate my efforts on a one-name study of (ISTED & variants) some 30 years ago. Since then, I have amassed a considerable amount of data (20,000+ records) that has helped me compile many (H)ISTED family trees covering 100s of pages.

The purpose of this paper is to provide an “overall summary of the main (H)ISTED Family Trees” that I have compiled. If there are more than three generations on one line I initially record them as a single Family Tree. However, in many cases I am subsequently able to link them to other family trees, usually emanating from the same geographical area. So, instead of having several 100 individual family trees, I have around 51 main locational (H)ISTED family trees, many of which are in turn linked to each other. Of course, some are far from complete and probably never will be, so omissions and errors have to be expected. In some cases the data within the trees have not been proven. In any event, those wishing to use the data I have collected should, where possible, recheck the original record(s). For the period 1538-1837 check Parish Registers & Bishops Transcripts, rather than relying on the International Genealogical Index (IGI). For the period 1837 onwards obtain the appropriate GRO birth, marriage, and death certificates; also get the appropriate images from Census Records 1841-1901 and obtain any Probate (Wills/Adomns). All of these records are important, not only to ensure that you have assigned your ancestors correctly, but also to give you a better insight into their lives and, in some cases, their personality.

I have grouped the (H)ISTED Family Trees geographically (by county &/or country) and there are 10 main areas:

1. Sussex

2. Surrey

3. Kent

4. London/Middlesex

5. Essex

6. Other UK counties (not mentioned beforehand)

7. United States of America

8. Canada

9. Australia

10. New Zealand .

Within these main areas I have a Title for the Family Tree, usually the place(s) where the families were mainly settled and within each main Tree I state:

l. Earliest known name of the person along with other known facts such as: their birth year and place; when and where plus to whom married; how many children in their family (number of sons + daughters); when and where died; their occupation.

2. Number of generations that are traced.

3. Number of descendant branches that can be traced (male lines only).

4. General comments about the family tree.

While I have numerous “Miscellaneous Trees” I will not be mentioning these unless they have more than 2 generations (many don’t as I can’t link them as yet). Also note that with some Trees the surname (in many cases) is ISTED, but may have in fact been recorded as a variant, eg: ISTEAD, ISTEED, HISTE(A)D, HIGHSTE(A)D, HYSTE(A)D, E(A)STED. I have tried to keep the surname as consistent as possible but in some cases it is impossible as sometimes the surname spelling differs between the birth/baptism, marriage and death/burial records. Where this happens I use the spelling of the surname as “(H)ISTED”. Generally speaking, once an “H” is picked up it usually stays, but there are instances where an “H” has been dropped at various periods in time for unknown reasons.

If you think you have a link to one of these trees, please contact me with a view to “sharing” more information. The emphasis is on sharing so please do not send me a short email and say, “I have a link to such and such a tree, can you please send me this tree”. Firstly I need to establish a few more details from you such as:

1. Exactly how do you link to an (H)ISTED?; ie tell me the closest link you have to that person (so I can see your relationship – eg 2x great-grandfather); and to provide me with other details (where known) such as names, dates, places.

2. Are you able to send me a Family Tree so I can see what research you have done?

3. Do you have any applicable documents to prove your ancestry? (eg BDM certs, census, probates)

In return for some of the above, I will check my 20,000+ records in various databases including all the Family Trees in my collection and I will send you some applicable data. Many of the Family Trees are compiled in Microsoft Word and are presented as a “dropline” tree (starts with earliest known ancestor and comes down to later generations/periods). In some cases the Tree may have a bit more family history background and other notes included with it.

1. FAMILY TREES FROM SUSSEX (13 main trees + miscellaneous trees)

i) ISTED of Mayfield, Framfield, Hastings, Warbleton

EARLIEST NAME: Laurence ISTED born/married probably mid-1400s and had at least 1 son (John); died pre-1486 Framfield; occupation unknown but possibly a Yeoman/Farmer.

GENERATIONS TRACED: 15 generations down to the late 1900s (my ancestral line).

DESCENDANT BRANCHES: 19

COMMENTS: Many of these ISTEDs (from 1600s+) were settled in the East Sussex parishes of: Warbleton, Bodle Street Green, Wartling, Herstmonceux & Hailsham. One very early branch settled in Ecton (Northamptonshire) in 1712. Other later branches (in 1800s) settled at Croydon in county of Surrey; one branch went to Portsea/Southampton in county of Hampshire in late 1830s; another branch went to county of Suffolk (c1911); another branch changed their surname from ISTED to HISTED by 1822 and several of their immediate descendants settled mainly in Dartford, Kent and in the London parishes of St Pancras, Southwark, and Camberwell with a sub-branch moving to Lancashire my mid-1800s and another sub-branch emigrating to Canada in mid-1900s. Another branch (my ancestors) emigrated to New Zealand in 1910.

GENERATIONS TRACED: 3 generations to early 1600s.

DESCENDANT BRANCHES: 3 but all appear to die off without surviving issue by mid-1600s.

COMMENTS: Possible earlier link to ISTED of Warbleton (1i). Some ISTEDs were settled in: Tonbridge (Kent), Winchelsea ( Sussex ), and one branch ended up in Plymouth ( county of Devon ).

GENERATIONS TRACED: 10+ to late 1900s.

DESCENDANT BRANCHES: 3 with a few sub-branches (quite large).

COMMENTS: This Tree has a probable link to the ISTED of Warbleton (1i). The ISTED of Ashburnham tree is one of the largest in my collection mainly because most families had numerous children and many did not venture far from their place of birth. However one branch settled in the Wolverhampton area of Staffordshire in early 1900s. Some branches moved to Kent ; another emigrated to Australia in early 1900s; and another emigrated to NZ in mid-1900s.

iv) ISTED of Burwash

EARLIEST NAME: John ISTED born 1766 Ashburnham (son of Thomas & Jemima – link to 1iii); married 1795 Burwash to Hannah HAYLER and they had 6 children (3 sons & 3 daughters); died 1840 Burwash; John was a Farmer.

GENERATIONS TRACED: 6+ to mid-1900s.

GENERATIONS TRACED: 8 to early 1900s.

DESCENDANT BRANCHES: 8

COMMENTS: Possible earlier link to ISTED of Warbleton (1i) or ISTED of Maresfield (1vii). Some ISTED of Buxted descendants settled at Waldron (1600s), Mayfield (1600s), Southover (1800s), Brighton (1800s). One branch went to Ightham , Kent by 1828 and then some went to Glamorgan, Wales . I also have several miscellaneous ISTEDs of Buxted but not enough data to link them into main tree.

vii) (H)ISTED of Maresfield

EARLIEST NAME: Robert ISTED born c1580s; married 1605 Buxted to Ann PHILLIP and they had 7 children (4 sons & 3 daughters); died 1650/1 Maresfield; Robert was a Miller.

DESCENDANT BRANCHES: 4

COMMENTS: PRs record some surnames as HISTED, HIGHSTED. Several descendants settled at Fletching, Horsted Keynes, West Hoathly , East Grinstead ; some branches ended up in the Kent parishes of Westerham & Westwell. viii) HISTED of Rotherfield

EARLIEST NAME: John HISTED born 1777 Fletching (son of Thomas/Elizabeth ISTED) married as HISTED in 1799 at Rotherfield to Elizabeth PRATT and they had 9 children (4 sons & 5 daughters); died 1862 Rotherfield; John was an Ag Lab but may have been a Shoemaker pre-1841.

Another large branch settled at Shermanbury, Henfield and Worthing . Some branches moved away by late 1700s & early 1800s to various other counties, such as Surrey (mainly settling at Croydon, Mitcham, Beddington, Caterham, Streatham, Lingfield); also some went to London (mainly at Hackney & Lambeth area); + Essex (mainly at Terling). In the mid-1700s several ISTEDs became HISTEDs and generally once they picked up an “H”, the family and their descendants generally tended stuck with it. Once branch of ISTEDs emigrated to New York , United States of America in 1820 and they had many descendants. One branch had their surname mainly as ISTEAD and they moved to Lingfield in Surrey mid-1800s and then to Lambeth by late 1800s and a sub-branch settled (mid-1900s) in counties of Worcestershire & Warwickshire.

EARLIEST NAME: Agnes ISTED of Steyning made Probate (Will) 1574 and she had 2 sons.

GENERATIONS TRACED: 3 to early 1600s.

DESCENDANT BRANCHES: 3

COMMENTS: Most families appear to die young &/or cannot be traced. Some were settled at Balcombe and East Grinstead but can’t link with the main ISTED of East Grinstead Tree (1ix).

xi) ISTED of Northchapel & Lurgashall

EARLIEST NAME: Charles ISTED born c1830-34 East Grinstead (possibly bpt 1834 illegitimate son of Mary HISTED); married c1862 (unknown date/place) to Mary Ann ..?.. and they had 12 children (7 sons, 5 daughters); died 1902 Northchapel; Charles was a Broomaker, Basket Maker, Chair Mender.

GENERATIONS TRACED: 4 to mid-1900s.

DESCENDANT BRANCHES: 6

COMMENTS: Possibly an earlier link to ISTED of Buxted (1vi). One descendant family went to Scotland in 1880 and had a son and then came back to Bolney. Some settled at Crowhurst ( Sussex ) and one branch settled (late 1800s) in Cheshire .

xiv) Miscellaneous (H)ISTEDs of Sussex (not many from East Sussex ; mainly West Sussex )

I suspect many of the smaller trees that are mostly only 1 or 2 generations probably link into one of the previously mentioned 13 trees. There are ISTEDs in mid-1600s to early 1700s at Westfield & Crowhurst but not sure if they link to the ISTEDs of Ashburnham or Warbleton. Data for most of these misc trees is very vague and requires a lot more research.

Henry was a Blacksmith. Tree has 5 generations with 2 main descendant trees going into the 1900s; some became HISTEDs by mid-1800s (frequent surname changes). Many were settled at Mitcham (early 1800s) and then Beddington mid-late 1800s) as well as Croydon. One branch went to Nottingham late 1800s; another branch emigrated to America in mid-1800s.

Also have another large tree that starts with Edward ISTED bpt 1783 East Grinstead son of William ISTED & Sarah HISTED (early link to West Sussex tree in 1.ix); married 1804 Mitcham to Ann KITE and they had 8 children (4 sons & 4 daughters); Edward died 1844 Beddington; he was a Blacksmith. Some descendants moved to London (mid-late 1800s) and then to Essex (early 1900s).

John ISTED bpt 1785 East Grinstead son of William ISTED & Sarah HISTED; married 1810 Mitcham to Mary LANGRIDGE and they had 8 children (5 sons & 3 daughters); died 1856 Beddington?; John was a Blacksmith. GENERATIONS TRACED: 5 to early 1700s.

DESCENDANT BRANCHES: 2

COMMENTS: Have several disjointed trees but probably all link up. Many were settled in Worplesdon & Wonersh & Woking. It is not certain if (before 1560s) the family were ISTED and or where they originated from. Have another misc tree that starts with Timohty ESTED born c1744, married 1767 Sutton to Sarah WEST and they had 10 children (4 sons & 6 daughters); 3 generations to mid-1800s, some were settled at Mitcham.

vii) (H)ISTED miscellaneous in Surrey

I suspect many of these smaller trees that are mostly only 1 or 2 generations, probably link into one of the previously mentioned 6 main Surrey trees. There is one large miscellaneous tree that starts with Richard ISTED (of Headley) married 1675 Mickelham to Elizabeth FLINT; has 4 generations to mid-1800s; possibly this tree links to the ISTED of Nutfield (2i) or Bletchingley (2ii).

CONCLUSION

As can be seen from this summary of (H)ISTED family trees, they are numerous (51 in fact), but the majority are South-East England based with especially strong links to the county of Sussex (both East Sussex & West Sussex). The next most populated area of (H)ISTED trees is in the English county of Surrey , closely followed by the county of Kent . Of particular interest is that the surnames: HISTED & HIGHSTED & HYSTED & ISTEED was predominant in the county of Kent so one might suspect these surnames originated here but unfortunately I do not have enough evidence to prove this theory. I am more partial to the thinking that some ISTEDs picked up an “H” in the 1500s and at various later periods. The surname ISTEAD is very rare and seems to be a variant of ISTED which is not often used but does appear more in the county of Surrey (especially Lingfield & Croydon area) in the 1800s. The remainder areas of the UK & abroad have very few individual (H)ISTED family trees due to having an earlier link into one of the main areas. Finally one can easily see that there are few trees that have been traced pre-1600 – in fact only 8 (4 in Sussex , 3 in Surrey and 1 in Kent ). And pre-1500 there are only 3 known trees. Most trees are well established by 1700s. One might assume (but can’t entirely prove) that the majority of (H)ISTEDs all descend from a common ancestor – probably William de ISTEDE of Mayfield , Sussex (alive c1285).
